Dr. Alex Hoja

Witold Alexander Hoja, MD, 87, passed away on Tuesday, May 2, 2017 at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center. Alex was born on September 14, 1929 in Krotoszyn, Poland to Jan and Teresa (Gorzel) Hoja. He lived in Poland until the age of 14 when he escaped to Germany in 1943 where he lived with his older sister.  In 1950 he was awarded a scholarship and student visa to attend Berea College in Kentucky where he graduated in 1953 with his pre-med degree.  While attending Berea College he met Ulrike Gaebler and they married one day after his graduation.  Alex attended medical school at Louisville.  In 1957 he joined the United States Army and was sent to Fitzsimmons Army Hospital for his OB-GYN residency.  After his residency he and his family were stationed in Frankfurt, Germany for several years and also Georgia. In 1965 they moved to Poplar Bluff where he practiced medicine and delivered babies for over 30 years. Alex loved Poplar Bluff and was involved with several organizations.  The Boy Scouts of America awarded him with the Silver Beaver Award for outstanding service to the Scouts. Alex is survived by his loving spouse of 63 years, Ulrike Hoja of the home; one son, Tom (Dee) Hoja of Poplar Bluff; and 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, Paul and Mike Hoja; 6 siblings and his parents. Visitation will be held on Saturday, May 6, 2017 from 1-3:00 p.m. at Moore Funeral Service in Poplar Bluff, MO. Barbara Smithson

Barbara Lynn Smithson, 69, of Harviell, passed away on Tuesday, May 2, 2017 in Harviell, MO. She was born on November 9, 1947 to Buelah Wilcox in Tacoma, WA.  She worked for Pyramid Home Health in Poplar Bluff. Barbara is survived by her two children, David Anderson of Peoria, AZ and Debra (Kevin) Bryant of Harviell, MO; and eight grandchildren and eight great-greatgrandchildren. She was preceded in death by husband, John Smithson and her mother. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, May 13, 2017 at 10:00 am in the Moore Funeral Service Chapel.  Allen Lutert officiating.

In Loving Memory

Shirley M. Robertson, 78, of Poplar Bluff, passed away on Wednesday, May 10, 2017 at her residence.

She was born on October 25, 1938 to Eugene and Myrtle (McClintock) Fuller in Oakland, CA.

Shirley worked hard all of her life and enjoyed her retirement.  She enjoyed gardening and reading, but most of all she loved spending time with her family and friends.

She was a member of the Poplar Bluff American Legion Post 153 and Poplar Bluff Eagles #3730 where she was a regular fixture at Sunday night Bingo.

Shirley is survived by her three children, Larry Zauss of Poplar Bluff, MO, Debra (Brian) Langel of Ridgeland, WI, and Thomas (Renae) Fuller of Kennett, MO; four grandchildren, David Zauss of Ozark, MO, Christopher Fuller of Seattle, WA, Jennifer Griffin of Chicago, IL, and Sierra Fuller of Poplar Bluff, MO; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Shari Steenburgh of Poplar Bluff, MO and Pat Christian of Trenton, TN; and one brother, Richard Fuller of CA.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and brothers, Tom, Sr., Lee, Mike, and Gary Fuller.

Memorials are suggested to the donor’s choice.

Ralph Muzny

Ralph Muzny, Jr., 63, of Williamsville, passed away on Tuesday, May 16, 2017 at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center. He was born on February 27, 1954 to Ralph and Shirley Muzny in Oklahoma City, OK.  Ralph obtained his Masters in Public Administration from University of Arkansas Little Rock and his Masters in Social Work from University of Missouri St. Louis.  He was employed with Keeling Company as the Warehouse Manager and Salesman in North Little Rock, AR.   He retired from the State of Missouri as a Children’s Division Social Worker in Wayne County.  After retirement Ralph was an adjunct professor for Three Rivers College in Poplar Bluff.   On June 8, 1980, he married Paula Faries in Williamsville, MO. He attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Poplar Bluff. Ralph is survived by his parents, Ralph and Shirley Muzny of Hot Springs, AR; his loving spouse of 36 years, Paula of the home; one son, Christopher (Kristina) Muzny of Dexter, MO; one daughter, Amie (Anthony) Brooks of Ellsinore, MO; five grandchildren, Rylan and Stryker Muzny and Jaxon, Addison, and Raylan Brooks; one brother, Mike Muzny of Hot Springs, AR; three sisters, Teresa Zeigler of Broken Arrow, OK, Janie Bozeman of Goleta, CA, and Cathy Buckmaster of Cabot, AR; and his father-in-law, James Faries of Williamsville, MO. He was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Wilma Faries. A private family service will be held. In lieu of flowers the family requests you make donations to the Foster Children’s Christmas Fund of Wayne County and can be sent to the Wayne County Children’s Division.

Jack Miller

Jack Miller, 76, of Poplar Bluff, passed away on Thursday, May 18, 2017 at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center. He was born on October 28, 1940 to Carl and Grace (Scott) Miller in Poplar Bluff, MO. Jack graduated from Poplar Bluff High School in 1958.  He received degrees in Aeronautics and Hotel/Motel Hospitality Management.  On June 2, 1966, he married Ann Webber in Poplar Bluff. Jack and his wife owned and managed several businesses throughout their marriage.   They owned IGA stores in Dexter, Sikeston, Southaven, MS, and Corning, AR.  In addition to grocery stores he also owned a boat dealership in Dexter and a United Truck Master Office. They also managed the Budgetel hotel in Kansas City, MO. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.  On many occasions, he traveled to hunting and fishing expos across the country and considered fishing to be his favorite hobby. Jack was an avid supporter of athletics, especially those that his grandchildren participated in.  He never missed a game or golf match they played in.  His love of sports also continued as a booster club member and supporter of the TRC Raiders. He was a member of the Dexter Masonic Lodge #532, Sikeston Shriners Club, Horse Patrol and Car Club, Poplar Bluff Jaycees, charter member of the Butler County Fair Board where he served as President, Missouri National Guard for 11 years, and the Green Forest Church of Christ in Poplar Bluff. Jack is survived by his loving spouse of 50 years, Ann (Webber) of Poplar Bluff;  two children, Mike (Angie); and  Jill (Clete); six grandchildren, Justin, Jase, Cy, Courtney, Jentri, and Febe; one great-granddaughter, Brooklyn; three great-grandsons, Jacob, Tristan, and Braxton and one brother, Richard Miller of Neelyville, MO. He was preceded in death by his parents. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 23 from 2-4:00 p.m. at Moore Funeral Service in Poplar Bluff, MO. Funeral services will be at 4:00 p.m. in the chapel with Adam Noles officiating.  Burial will take place at the Poplar Bluff City Cemetery. Dorothy Zahner

Dorothy Louise Zahner, 90, of Poplar Bluff, passed away on Friday, May 19, 2017 at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center. She was born on December 13, 1926 to John and Mary (Cremeens) Snider in St. Louis, MO.  She graduated from Central High School in St. Louis and William Woods University with a Bachelor’s Degree.   Dorothy was the owner of Wolf Run Residential Care and Cardinal House Assisted Living in Poplar Bluff. Dorothy was a longtime member of Grace United Methodist Church and the L.O.W. RV Group where she traveled the country with other independent women. She was an avid painter and painting instructor, loved the outdoors, her family, and God. Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Brook Fears of Poplar Bluff, MO; two granddaughters, Amanda Fears of Boston, MA and Casey Zahner of Omaha, NE; three grandsons, Adam (Jenny) Fears of Poplar Bluff, MO, Jared Fears of MN, and John (Ashley) Zahner of Poplar Bluff, MO; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Craig Zahner; her son-in-law, Dennis Fears; one brother, John Snider; and her parents. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 23, 2017 from 9:30-10:00 a.m. at Moore Funeral Service in Poplar Bluff, MO. Funeral services will be held immediately following visitation at 10:00 a.m. in the Moore Funeral Service Chapel with Reverend Byron Beck officiating. Mike Waddell

Mike Waddell, 60, of Poplar Bluff, passed away on Saturday, May 20, 2017 at his residence. He was born on March 19, 1957 to Rod and Ruby (Morse) Waddell in West Covina, CA.  He graduated from Granite City North High School in 1976.  After graduating he started as a security officer at Edgewater Casino in Laughlin, NV.  He later went to work for Gold Strike/Circus-Circus Casino where he eventually retired as the Head of Security and Slots.  During his time working in the casinos he became acquainted with Hugh Hefner and had the honor to party at the Playboy Mansion and meet the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders. Mike enjoyed playing golf and racquetball. After moving to Poplar Bluff he bought Loch Loma Store and eventually turned it in to Mike’s Bar. Mike is survived by his four siblings, Randy Waddell, Nanette Neel, and Patrice (Steve) Bostic all of Poplar Bluff, MO and Jeff Waddell of Phoenix, AZ; his best friend and ex-wife, Marsha Waddell of Poplar Bluff; one daughter, Melissa Hayes of Florida; and his grandchildren, Lexis, Livi, and Jessalee Hayes. He was preceded in death by his parents. A memorial gathering and pot luck dinner will be held on Friday, May 26, 2017 from 5-8:00 p.m. at Moore Funeral Service in Poplar Bluff.  Immediately following the family and friends invite everyone to Mike’s Bar on W Highway.

Baby Kayson is survived by his Mother and Father, Leona and Jesse Gurlen, two sisters, Addison Grace and Jessie Faith Gurlen; three uncles, Joshua Gurlen and Robert McFarland both of Poplar Bluff, and JR Hahn Fredericktown; four Aunts Anita (James) Freeman, and Kelly Faughn both of Poplar Bluff, Brandy Hahn of Fredericktown, MO, and Stephanie Bone of New York; one grandmother Sheila Porter of Fredericktown, MO;  two grandfathers, Norman Hahn of Fredericktown, MO and Gary Beckham of Poplar Bluff; his great grandmother, Leona Lovvorn of Fredericktown; and cousins, Logan (Samy) Freeman of Dexter, their son Kaidan,  Zoë Jade Freeman of Poplar Bluff and Seth, Cody, Kyle, Emily, and Oliva Bone all of New York, Kirsten Grigery of Park Hills, MO, and Steven and Benton Hahn of Fredericktown, MO Kayson was preceded in death by his Nana, Deanna Kay Beckham and his Grandpa James (BUD) Leon Gurlen. Carl Eugene James, 73, of Poplar Bluff, passed away on Tuesday, May 30, 2017 at Westwood Hills Health Care Center in Poplar Bluff, MO. He was born on January 12, 1944 to Carl and Lottie Lorene (Gabriel) James in Poplar Bluff, MO. Carl graduated from Poplar Bluff High School in 1961.   Carl served in the United States Army.   After high school, he obtained his associates degree from Three Rivers College in 1970, his Bachelor’s Degree from Arkansas State University in 1972, and his Master’s Degree from Southeast Missouri State University in 1974. Carl worked as a school teacher for East Carter School District for over 30 years and retired in 2004.  After retirement, he continued as a substitute teacher for the East Carter School District. Carl enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid gardener and loved traveling with close friends. He was a member of Missouri State Teachers Association. Carl is survived by one sister, Marilyn Y. Dodge of Poplar Bluff, MO; one nephew, Perry L. Dodge of Oklahoma City, OK; three nieces, Laura Harris of Loganville, GA, Lisa Powers of Rosharon, TX, and Melanie Mossman of Poplar Bluff, MO. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Jerry James. Visitation will be held Friday, June 2, 2017 from 10 - 11:00 am at Moore Funeral Service in Poplar Bluff, MO. Graveside services will be held on Friday, June 2, 2017 at 11:00 am in Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Poplar Bluff, MO.  Officiating will be Mark North. Charles Edward Stallings, 61, of Poplar Bluff, passed away on Monday, June 12, 2017 at The Manor in Poplar Bluff. He was born on July 18, 1955 to Charles Edward Stallings, Sr. and Rosella (Wilson) Hanner in Malden, Mo.  He loved hunting, fishing, and collecting arrowheads. Charles is survived by his wife, Doris Stallings of Poplar Bluff; his children, Mindy Alexander of Virginia and Keith and Rachel Stallings of Cape Girardeau, Mo.; six grandchildren; four sisters, Bobbi Brent  and Jackie Alexander, both of Warrenton, Mo., Terri Priest of Poplar Bluff, Mo., and Katherine Barger of Naylor, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews. John Hansmann

John Joseph Hansmann, 75, of Poplar Bluff, passed away on Tuesday, June 20, 2017 at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center. He was born on June 13, 1942 to Alfred Hansmann and Mary (DeRusha) Farley in Chicago, IL. John was raised by his grandparents, Alfred and Marie Hansmann in Carlinville, IL and graduated from Carlinville High School in 1960.  He obtained his nursing education from St. Louis City Hospital as a Registered Nurse and later St. John’s Hospital School of Anesthesia in Springfield, IL.  In 1966 he joined the United States Air Force and became part of the Air Force Reserve after his active duty.  During his time in the reserves he was called back to active duty during Operation Desert Storm and retired after nearly 30 years as a Colonel.  He moved to Poplar Bluff in 1968 and worked as an anesthetist for Doctor’s Regional Medical Center in Poplar Bluff until his retirement in 2006.  On August 18, 1990, he married Jane Ervin in Poplar Bluff, MO. After he and Jane retired they volunteered each summer for Sable Points Lighthouses Keepers Association on Lake Michigan and worked at all 4 lights operated by SPLKA for 11 years.  He enjoyed fishing, but most of all, he loved spending time with his grandchildren and supporting their athletic events and other interests. John is survived by his loving spouse of 26 years, Jane Hansmann of Poplar Bluff; six children, Sherry Whitby of Pleasant View, TN, Rebecca Hansmann, PhD. of Nashville, TN, Joseph Hansmann of West Plains, MO, and Kimberly (Paul) Wells of Poplar Bluff, MO, Eric (Rebeca) Ervin of Annandale, VA, and John (Victoria) Ervin of Hermann, MO; thirteen grandchildren, Taylor and Tucker Whitby, Anna Fowler, Jada Martin, Jaci and Jakoby Hansmann, Gavin and Dylan Wells, Sean Jones, and Ethan, Aaron, Kevin, and Charlotte Ervin; two great-granddaughters, Aliza & Fiona Wells; and five siblings, Jean Koncelski of Chicago, IL, Carol Krock of Chicago, IL, Ray Farley of Luddington, MI, Jeanette Hansmann of FL, and Lori Perry of Braidwood, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, and his infant brother, Donald Hansmann. Visitation will be held on Monday, June 26, 2017 from 5-8:00 p.m. at Moore Funeral Service in Poplar Bluff. Funeral services will be on Tuesday, June 27, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at The First United Methodist Church in Poplar Bluff with David Stewart officiating.   A military burial will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday at the Bloomfield Veteran’s Cemetery.

Bobby E. Moore

Bobby Eugene Moore, 55, of Poplar Bluff, Mo, passed away Tuesday, June 27, 2017 at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center. He was born on June 16, 1962 in Broseley, MO to Clyde and the late Jackie Barringer Moore.  On January 20, 2001, he married Sandy White in Broseley. Bobby formerly worked for the Twin Rivers and Doniphan School district for years.  He was an avid basketball fan of the Twin Rivers Royals, Doniphan Dons, and Kentucky Wildcats.  Throughout the years, he enjoyed coaching many youth basketball and baseball teams in the Fisk and Puxico areas. Bobby loved spending time with his grandchildren, and loved being outdoors, especially mowing and working in the yard. In addition to his loving wife and father, Bobby is survived by four children, Brody Moore of the home, Scotty Moore of Kennett, MO, Alex Moore of Kennett, MO, Tamra (Evan) Lentz of Hardin, KY; a step-son, Scott (Heather) Taylor of Poplar Bluff, MO; six grandchildren, Taylor Rice, Aubree Harrison, Kalan Whiteside, Karson Lentz and Rylee and Mallie Taylor; five siblings, Karen (Wayne) Whitt of Poplar Bluff, MO, Kathy (John) Ward of Broseley, MO, Kenny (LaDonna) Moore of Poplar Bluff, MO, Jerry Moore of Poplar Bluff, and Randy (Tammy) Moore of Broseley, MO; father and mother-in-law, Francis and Doris White of Chaffee, MO; sister-in-law, Debbie (Larry) Johns of Jackson, MO; his brother-in-law, Rickey (Connie) White of Oran, MO; and several nieces and nephews. Bobby was preceded in death by his mother. Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 29, 2017 from 5-8 pm at the Palace of Praise in Poplar Bluff. Funeral services will be on Friday, June 30, 2017 at 11:00 am at the Palace of Praise in Poplar Bluff with Rev. Bobby E. Moore and Mike Stevenson officiating.  Burial will follow in Brown Chapel Cemetery in Broseley, MO.

Hal Henry Reynolds, Jr., 42, of Wappapello, MO passed away on Sunday, July 9, 2017 at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center. He was born on October 16, 1974 to Hal Reynolds and Rosemary Howton in Blythe, CA. He graduated from Palo Verde High School in 1992. He enjoyed fishing and gardening and most especially loved his dog, Harley. Hal is survived by his five children, Jacqueline Shultz of Wappapello, MO, Zachary Nelson and  Jacob H. Reynolds both of Summerville, SC, Brittany Reynolds of Moncks Corner, SC, and Payton Nelson of Sikeston, MO; his ex-wife, Amy (Reynolds) Hernandez of Summerville, SC; one sister, Marcella (Anthony) Reynolds-Counts of Benton, KY; one brother, Jimmy Polston and his grandfather, J.W. Howton, both of Senath, MO; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his grandfather Bufford Reynolds; and his grandmother, Irene Howton. Sharon Kay Fyte

Sharon Kay Fyte, 70, of Poplar Bluff, MO, passed away on June 29, 2017 at her residence.  Born and raised in Hammond, Indiana, she received a Bachelor's Degree from Indiana University and entered a lifelong pursuit of excellence in the field of journalism.  She began work as a reporter and was soon promoted to an editorial position at the Hammond Times.  She later moved to Broward County, FL, where she continued to excel at the Sun-Sentinel there until she left to earn a Master's of Divinity Degree at the United Methodist Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio. Forged in God's crucible through difficult years, Sharon ("Sherry" in her early years) was genuine, without pretense and full of humility, empathy, and a wry sense of humor.  Her strong faith and enduring compassion for others framed her life. Sharon is survived by friend and aunt Dean (Billie) Northington, dear long-time family friend Robert Sanders; one sister Carol (Cliff Tower) Cramer; nieces Tracey (Tim) Cramer-Kelly, AmyLane (Nick) Cramer-Klein, and Kathryne (Jack Riebel) Cramer; nephew Ryan (Elizabeth) Cramer; grand-nieces, Evelyn Kelly and Amelie Cramer; grand-nephews Isaac, Mark, and Julian Klein, Nathan Kelly, and Adrian Cramer; and numerous extended family and friends. Sharon is preceded in death by her sister Linda Fyte, her aunt Marie Fyte, and her dear friend Millie (Bill) Dickens. The family will hold private services at a later date. Dean Greenwood, 55, of Fisk, MO passed away on Friday, July 14, 2017 at his residence. He was born on September 19, 1961 to Connie and Katherin (Morgan) Greenwood in Kansas City, MO. He enjoyed cars and working on engines. Dean is survived by his brother, Elwyn Greenwood of Gravois Mills, MO; two sisters, Janice Casey, Brenda Landers, and Connie Roe all of Poplar Bluff, MO; one daughter, Bonita and Bobby Long of Fisk, MO; and four grandchildren, Bobby II, Clarance, Brittany, and Paul Long of Fisk. He was preceded in death by his parents. Graveside services will at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, July 21, 2017 at Brown Chapel Cemetery in Broseley, MO. The family invites friends of Dean to People’s Creek on Saturday, July 22, 2017 at 3 PM to participate in a BBQ and releasing balloons in his honor.

Patricia Ann (Doggett) Horton, 76, of Poplar Bluff, passed away on Monday, July 17, 2017 at Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center. She was born on June 30, 1941 to Ralph and Alena (Dummey) Doggett in Cape Girardeau, MO. Patricia is survived by her four children, Danny Tipton, Vicki Rushing, Alene Porter all of Poplar Bluff, and Karen Scott Holden, MO; ten grandchildren, Teresa Tipton, Anthony Topton, Brandy Jarrell, Dusty Stone, Bradley Stone, Kenny Polin, Bryan Light, Tricia Light, Megan Bruhn, and Ethan Bruhn; several great-grandchildren;  three brothers, Ralph Charles Doggett of El Paso, TX, Steven Doggett of Poplar Bluff, MO, and Bill Doggett of Naples, FL. She was preceded in death by her parents and one grandson, Kevin Light. A private family memorial will be held at a future date.

Paul L.  Tackett, 81, of Poplar Bluff, passed away at his residence on Thursday, July 27, 2017 in Poplar Bluff, MO. He was born on June 8, 1936 to Theodore and Frances (Ethridge) Tackett in Hendrickson, MO. He graduated from Poplar Bluff High School in 1953.  Paul started working for The Daily American Republic in 1960 until his retirement in 1998.  On January 11, 1958, he married Mary Coleman in Poplar Bluff, Missouri. Paul enjoyed hunting, fishing, crossword puzzles, and writing poems.  Most of all he loved spending time with his family.  He was a member of Westwood Baptist Church. Paul is survived by his loving spouse of 59 years, Mary, of the home; two daughters, Trish Grady and husband Ken of Poplar Bluff, MO and Marilyn Eason a nd husband Mark of Mill Spring, MO; three grandchildren, James Guise and wife Ashley of Imperial, MO, Rachel Cravens and husband Lance of Poplar Bluff, MO, and Melanie Taylor and husband Russell of Springdale, AR; four great-granddaughters, Charlotte, Sallie, and Clara Guise, and Layton Cravens; t wo brothers, Homer Tackett and wife Elaine of Monroe, WI and Larry Tackett of Poplar Bluff, MO; and one sister, Wilma Graf of Monroe, WI. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Lester Tackett; one sister, Delores Moore; and one sister-in-law, Pansy Sue Tackett Visitation will be on Saturday, July 29, 2017 from 1 - 2:00 pm at Moore Funeral Service in Poplar Bluff. Funeral services will be held immediately following visitation at 2:00 pm in the Moore Funeral Service Chapel with Pastor Steve Proctor officiating.  Burial will take place in the Poplar Bluff City Cemetery.
